Georgia Coast: Jekyll Island National Historic District

Georgia Coast: Jekyll Island National Historic District
Established in 1886 as a winter haven for wealthy Northern families–including the Astors, Vanderbilts, Pulitzers, Morgans, and McCormicks–the millionaires’ village includes “cottages” and exclusive clubhouse. The Federal Reserve started here; you can actually tour the room where the secret meetings took place, and view photographs of the elite participants. The telephone box, where the first trans-continental call occurred, is located on the grounds next to the still-used croquet lawn. Now a state park, Jekyll Island offers guided historic tours of the district, along with miles of bicycle paths winding along moss-draped live oaks and sandy beaches.

Insider Tip

Georgia Food & Dining: Brunswick Stew

Georgia Food & Dining: Brunswick Stew
Originally created in Brunswick, Georgia, this unique cuisine is enjoyed all over the world. Mention Brunswick Stew to a Southerner and you're likely to hear lyrical accounts of open fires, black iron pots, a mess of squirrel, rabbit and possum that somebody's daddy brought home. Today, chicken is the foundation of the stew, adding tomatoes, butter beans, fresh picked corn and a secret blend of seasonings.

What a Great Place
Days Inn Savannah, Georgia I was very impressed with this Days Inn. We stayed for two nights. Check in was smooth and easy, the front desk person was very friendly and accomodating. The room was clean and even smelled like it had just been cleaned. The bed was comfortable and there were lots of pillows. Towels were thick and comfortable. We enjoyed the large TV and there are plenty of channels to choose from. We also utilized the Microfridge in the room and the microwave. The Continental Breakfast was good and it was nice to get a USA Today, even though I don't normally read that particular newspaper. All in all, this is a very nice hotel with lots of comfort and amenities for a very reasonable price. Travel.Yahoo.com User
